Tyke's TidBits

Well, we have made it through July with just a smidgin' of a Tropical Storm/Hurricane, to lose some sleep over...for some people , but thankfully, not us.

Hopefully it has woke up the communities, and they won't get "lax" on their storm preparations. On the other hand, as HAMs, we pretty much try to stay on top of these things and are usually ready on short notice to handle the communications requirements as needed.

Monitoring our local repeaters for storm updates and ARES announcements is the most direct way to find out what communication needs are being requested for the area. At this time, it appears we may have a couple disturbances out there in the Atlantic that bear watching, so stay aware , stay informed and doublr check your batteries, generators, radios and other gear you may have in your go kit(s). To echo the Boy Scouts slogan "Be Prepared"!!!

We will be holding our next meeting at the Ponchatoula Community Center, which will be our "Installation of Officers" also. There will be a pre-meeting social also at La Carretas' by the tracks in Ponchatoula @5:15 pm, for those who wish to grab a bite or a drink before the meeting.

73 es see u at the meeting,

Repeater
(Ernie N5NIB): Regarding the club insurance policies, Ernie explained that in discussing with ARRL Insurance about the coverage with ARRL found that the ARRL insurance program is apparently not provided by Mercer, and the club's policy there might be with a previous insurance vendor of ARRL. Need to review cost and possibly adding insurance to make sure feedline and antenna would be insured.
(Tyrone N5XES): The new repeater is programmed. Russell Plyler came to the CC. and performed some setup for basic operation in AMS mode for the new repeater. Hope to deploy tomorrow afternoon.
ARES
Pat KE5KMM - EC): ARES keeping eyes peeled on the weather; as a disturbance is coming around, and reminding everyone to keep up on their hurricane preparations. Pat invites everyone to join the weekly nets on Monday night 8:30PM, and especially during hurricane season: try joining in using batteries and inside antennas.

==> Some European Telecoms Regulators Keeping an Open Mind on French 2-Meter Proposal
At least two European telecommunications regulators appear inclined to give serious consideration to a French proposal to allocate 146 - 148 MHz to the Aeronautical Mobile Service on a primary basis. Some International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) Region 1 member-societies have written their governments' regulators, expressing opposition to the proposal, aired at a June CEPT meeting. ARDC manages AMPRNet. While the sale fetched "several million dollars," ARDC said that its Board of Directors had agreed to keep the exact figure confidential for now, "to avoid adversely influencing others buying and selling addresses."
The addresses sold came out of a block of some 16 million internet addresses obtained nearly 40 years ago and "devoted exclusively to Amateur Radio" for TCP/IP ham radio networking ...
